Three Ways To Reuse Your Kitchen Cabinets

If you are looking for ways to cut a few corners during your upcoming remodel, you may not have to look any further than your kitchen cabinets. With new cabinets running anywhere from $60 to $1,200 per linear foot, they can quickly add a huge chunk of change to your bottom line. If your cabinets are outdated but still in good condition, there are ways that you or your remodeling contractors may be able to make them look new for a fraction of the price that replacing them would cost.

Paint Them

Probably one of the easiest ways to change the looks of your cabinets is to paint them. This allows you to use a uniformed color throughout your kitchen, or use one color in one area and another color in another. But first they will have to be taken down and labeled so you will know which one goes back where. They will then have to be scrubbed and sanded. This can be a very time consuming process depending on how many you have.

If sanding and scrubbing is not done right you may have problems with your paint sticking or being even and uniformed in color. For the best results use a primer before applying your paint. Once your first coat of paint has dried, consider a final sanding using fine grit sandpaper. Add another coat of paint, and a coat of satin polycrylic. This is water-based and can go on over wood or paint.

Open Them Up

If you are looking for a quick way to update your cabinets without a whole lot of effort, considering opening them up by removing the doors and creating open shelving. It can provide you with more flexibility while creating space to display your collectibles. It is really convenient, as you will be able to see everything you are looking for. If you choose this option, just remember, open shelving requires you to keep your space a little neater.

Add Glass Fronts

If you are not quite ready to open your cabinets completely up, consider installing glass fronts to your cabinet doors. There are a wide variety of glass choices to choose from. Some of these include:

  • Clear Plain
  • Crackled
  • Patterned
  • Colored
  • Etched and more

In addition to adding glass fronts, consider adding a little interior lighting to create a depth within your space.

These are just a few ideas, your remodeling contractors, such as Olson Cabinets & Woodworking Inc, will be able to offer you even more options to choose from. Remember, your kitchen is a space that you will want to spend time in. Make it one you will enjoy.
